Music choices and explanations

Trey songz- Smart phone-We felt this would be an appropriate music choice for our documentary as it relates to topic area of mobile phones. The lyrics also explain some of the problems that can arise from using a mobile phone in the wrong way. Which  fits with one of the purposes of our documentary to inform the audience of some of the dangers of using mobile phones incorrectly. From research into our target audience. this genre of music would appeal to them. so therefore by using this as backing music in our documentary it is drawing them to watch it as they may feel the content will appeal to them as they are exposed to the topic in their everyday lives.
However the song is very slow pace and may not fit well with the footage. So we will have to review our footage first to see where it may be appropriate.

Beyonce- Video phone- Beyonce is a well known influencial artist who the majority of our target audience would of heard of, this makes her a good artist to include as they will recognise the music. The title of the song also relates to our topic making it a good audio to feature over background footage. Unlike smart phone this song is more upbeat so can be used for our faster paced background footage.

Electric Light Orchestra- Telephone Lines-Although this particular song may not be one our target audience has listened to. We felt the start of the song was unique as it featured  sounds associated with mobile phones. This could be used for the opening footage of our documentary as we are introducing the purpose of our documentary. this will further show the purpose of the documentary.

Neon trees- Text me in the morning
From listening to this we feel the first 30 seconds would be perfect to play over the opening footage of the different mobile phones. The lyrics also relate to our topic area which makes it an appropriate song choice as it states the problems associated with mobile phones and anti-social. All problems the target audience may come across.

Progress Check

Logging sheets

Logging Sheets
For the logging sheets we had to note down every single clip we had filmed in the time frame section. Next we had to decide whether we would be using the clip or not, just a brief decision, also right a brief description of what is going on in the clip so it is easy for us to locate.
The shot, Scene and Take were added in relation to our storyboard, and weather our shot was included in our storyboard or weather it was improvised.

Having to do this was time consuming and hard work but it had to be done so that we could move onto the next task. We started the logging in lesson and then completed it in our own time as it had to be done to a deadline which we would most likely not have met if we didn't spend our free time doing it. This is a good example of time management and planning ahead. When realising we could not get it done in class time we had to make plans to get it complete for next lesson, which meant working independently.

To get this complete we had to work together, therefore one of us would write down the time, scene, shot, take and the other would read it off of the computer files. By doing this we completed it to a good detailed level and in a short amount of time compared to maybe other groups in our class.

Expert interview planning

For my expert I chose to contact a member of my family who is is a manager at apple, this will allow us to gather opinions from a multinational corporation that has dominated the mobile phone market. It also allows us to represent the experts of the feild in the documentary.

          People who didn't respond/didn't participate

At certain points during filming we were let down by vox-pops. Although this was an inconvenience e were able to overcome it by seeking other people to do interviews. We made sure each interview was arranged early so that if people did drop out we could still use our time effectively.

topic research post 12b

we also found some other statistics online that show similar figures, I gathered more than one source so I am able to cross reference the results to make sure they are reliable for my documentary. Getting the truest statistics is very important so we are able to give the audience the correct information.

Intro to topic research post 12

Task 11-Proposal

GENERAL
The topic of our documentary will be mobile phone usage, and in particular whether such devices have become a luxury to modern day society. We aimed to investigate this using the exploratory mode, with a mixed documentary with an informative but informal style. We feel this is definitely most appropriate to our potential target audience, as too much of a formal style of documentary would likely turn viewers off and makes potential audiences feel more isolated. We aim for a warm and relatable feel to our documentary to appeal to more people than perhaps it would have otherwise; this will make our audiences listen to our message more than using a clinical approach similar to a David Attenborough documentary.

SCHEDULING
We have chosen to release our documentary on Channel 4, at 8 o’clock, because the channel has many documentaries aimed at the younger viewers and in general has a larger audience of young adults. Channel 4 has already had many TV documentaries which appeal to the audience of young adults such as ‘Body Shockers’, Secret life of Students’ and Sexting Teacher’, which all target a particular age range of 16 to early 20s. Channel 4 also has branch channels such as E4 and 4music, which are again aimed at young adults. The majority of E4’s programmes are aimed at teenagers/young adults and the same with the music channel ‘4music’ has chart music. which this particular target audience will listen to. We have set the time of the documentary to be at 8 o’clock as it seems like the most appropriate time as we figured out that from around 6:30-8pm there are a number of soap operas on TV such as ‘Hollyoaks’ and ‘Emmerdale’, and we thought the numbers of people watching such soaps would be quite high; this broadens the available market for our documentary, as more people will likely be available to watch than otherwise. Contrastingly, from 9-11pm, many regular TV series are featured, so people of our target audience will give their attention to them. Furthermore, this is when the watershed is, so the majority of our target audience will likely flock to programmes of a more adult nature, so we decided to settle in the middle so that we could reach as wide an audience as possible.

TARGET AUDIENCE
More specifically, we think our target audience will be in the age range of 16 to early 20s. We feel these are the people most affected by mobile phone usage and are the first generation who have grown up pretty much surrounded in such technology. We feel as a result of this that they will be more intrigued by the documentary itself than much older audiences (such as the elderly, aged sixty and above), who may feel polarized by an area they may not feel particularly familiar with; however, it is important to note that this is a stereotype and may simply be a result of media representation of the older generation. However, the point still stands that the younger generation will be most attracted to this documentary.

post 10- Mind mapping ideas

Progress diary

By mind mapping different ideas of topics it has allowed us as a group to identify which ideas have the most potential and relevance to our target audience. We feel the activity of weighing out the advantages and disadvantages has lead to us picking our current topic of 'mobile devices: luxury or necessity?' We felt by picking this topic we were able to use a range of vox-pops available at college. Overall as a group we are equally as enthusiastic about the topic idea and feel we have come to the right decision. Also we have chosen this to be our topic question as us as students feel that we can relate to others opinions on mobile phones and we will gather a range of accurate results with any research we do throughout the project as we are within an environment which represents our topic specifically.

post 1-welcome

Hello, we are Abby, Sophie and Tom

We have been put into a group of three, were will be working together for the next A2 year in order to make the first 5 minutes of a documentary, based on a subject of our choice. We hope to work well as a group and hope that all our individual skills come together and we can all learn new things from one another.
